US to extend airbag probe rather than require vehicle recall

The U.S. auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has decided not to seek an immediate recall of approximately 50 million air bag inflators produced by ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive, despite concerns over potential ruptures that could lead to serious injuries or fatalities. This decision comes after a preliminary evaluation that began in 2015, which identified 7 fatalities and 80 injuries linked to these inflators. The NHTSA has concluded that while there is a safety defect, the issue does not warrant an immediate recall due to the complexity and the need for further investigation into the root cause of the ruptures. Instead, the agency will continue to monitor the situation and has urged ARC to conduct additional testing. Meanwhile, ARC Automotive has contested the findings, asserting that their inflators meet safety standards and that the incidents are isolated.
