  • CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has refused to order a private educational institution to allow an undergraduate student with low attendance rate to attend examinations, stating such a relief would amount to mocking other students who regularly attended classes.

The Madras High Court has upheld the attendance requirement for students, denying a plea by a student from the Government Law College in Tiruchirappalli who sought permission to appear for semester exams despite not meeting the 75% attendance threshold. The student, who had only 50% attendance, argued that his absence was due to health issues and participation in extracurricular activities. However, Justice G.R. Swaminathan dismissed the petition, emphasizing the importance of regular attendance for academic discipline and the development of a student's character. The court noted that allowing such exceptions could set a precedent that undermines the educational system's structure.
