As many as 50 million Americans suffer autoimmune conditions. A Stanford Medicine study identified a gap in the research—and an answer.
A recent study published in the journal *Rheumatology* has revealed that 75% of individuals with autoimmune diseases share a common trait: they are women. This finding underscores the significant gender disparity in autoimmune conditions, where diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis predominantly affect women. The study suggests that hormonal differences, genetic factors, and the influence of sex chromosomes might contribute to this disparity. Researchers are now focusing on understanding why women are more susceptible, exploring potential links to estrogen levels, X chromosome inactivation, and the microbiome. This research not only highlights the need for gender-specific approaches in diagnosing and treating autoimmune diseases but also calls for increased awareness and tailored medical research to address these conditions more effectively in women.
