In June 2012, Florida became the 47th state to allow dental hygienists to induce local anesthesia. The University of Florida College of Dentistry has been offering this 60 hour program to dental hygienists since September 2012. To date, there have been 4 certification courses completed with a total of 150 dental hygienists certified. Currently, there are 10,000 dental hygienists licensed in the state of Florida.
Samuel B. Low, D.D.S., M.S., M.Ed., course director in the UF Department of Periodontics, stated, "We have introduced the STA System into our core curriculum and have received nothing but positive feedback from participants.
