  • The GMC raised concerns about royal colleges 'dissuading' GPs from employing PAs with 'restrictive' scopes of practice.

The General Medical Council (GMC) has expressed concerns that overly restrictive scopes of practice for physician associates (PAs) could discourage GP practices from employing them, potentially exacerbating workforce shortages in primary care. The GMC highlighted that while PAs can significantly enhance the capacity of GP teams, the current regulatory framework might limit their ability to perform certain tasks, thus reducing their appeal to practices. This issue was discussed in a recent consultation on the regulation of PAs and anaesthesia associates (AAs), where the GMC emphasized the need for clear guidelines to ensure patient safety while allowing PAs to contribute effectively to healthcare delivery. The GMC is advocating for a balanced approach that supports both patient safety and the efficient use of PAs in general practice.
