On November 16, 2011, the press reported that a former Vitas Healthcare Corp. (aVitasa) manager has accused the hospice chain of defrauding the federal government by conspiring with health insurers to enroll Medicare patients who werenat dying. Vitas is a subsidiary of Chemed and is the largest U.S. provider of hospice care in the country.
The allegations against Vitas were uncovered when a whistleblower lawsuit filed in Dallas federal court was unsealed earlier in November 2011. The U.S. Department of Justice is also seeking internal Vitas documents in an investigation focused on alleged abuses of federal health-insurance programs. The government has told the court it suspects Vitas of aan extensive schemea to defraud Medicare and Medicaid of ahundreds of millions of dollarsa by falsifying records and hospice certifications.
This news caused Chemed stock to plunge 15% on November 16, 2011 to a low of $48.10 per share and eventually closed at $50.65 per share that day, down from its previous dayas close of $57.52 per share.
