FVHD to Host Free Youth Mental Health Training
Locale: UNITED STATES

Canton, CT - March 11, 2026 - Recognizing a growing national and local crisis, the Farmington Valley Health District (FVHD) is taking proactive steps to bolster youth mental health support within the community. On March 27, 2026, the FVHD will host a crucial free training program designed to equip adults with the skills to identify, understand, and respond to mental health challenges in young people. The session, to be held at the Canton Senior Center from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, is a direct response to escalating concerns surrounding adolescent and young adult mental wellbeing.
The need for such training is becoming increasingly urgent. Recent data from the National Institute of Mental Health reveals a significant rise in rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation among youth. Factors contributing to this trend include academic pressures, social media influences, economic uncertainties, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Without adequate support systems and knowledgeable adults, young people struggling with mental health challenges often suffer in silence, leading to potentially devastating consequences.
Dr. James Polhemus, health director for the Farmington Valley Health District, emphasized the importance of early intervention. "We know that youth mental health is a critical issue, and we want to empower adults with the tools and knowledge they need to support the young people in their lives," he stated. "This isn't just about identifying a crisis; it's about fostering a supportive environment where young people feel comfortable seeking help before things escalate."
The training program is specifically tailored for adults who interact with youth on a regular basis. This includes, but isn't limited to, parents, educators, coaches, youth group leaders, and anyone involved in the care or supervision of young people. The curriculum will cover a range of vital topics, including recognizing the common warning signs of mental health conditions, understanding the pervasive impact of stigma, and developing effective communication strategies to approach a young person who may be struggling.
Participants will also gain crucial knowledge regarding available local resources. The FVHD understands that simply identifying a problem isn't enough; connecting youth with appropriate support services - therapists, counselors, support groups, and crisis hotlines - is equally essential. The training will provide a comprehensive overview of these resources, ensuring participants have the information they need to facilitate timely and effective intervention.
Beyond Recognition: Addressing the Stigma
A key component of the training will focus on combating the stigma surrounding mental health. Many young people are reluctant to seek help due to fear of judgment, discrimination, or being labeled. The program will equip adults with the language and understanding necessary to challenge these negative perceptions and create a more supportive and accepting environment. This includes emphasizing that mental health is an integral part of overall health and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
The FVHD's initiative aligns with a broader national movement towards prioritizing youth mental health. The Biden-Harris administration recently announced significant investments in mental health services for young people, recognizing the long-term benefits of early intervention. Furthermore, numerous states and communities are implementing similar training programs to equip adults with the skills they need to support youth wellbeing.
Registration and Access
The training is free and open to the public, but registration is required to ensure adequate space and materials. Interested individuals can register online at https://www.fvhd.org/youth-mental-health-training/. The FVHD encourages anyone who works with or cares for young people to participate in this valuable program. By investing in the mental wellbeing of our youth, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community.
