Mentor, Ohio - April 8th, 2026 - As spring truly takes hold, residents of Lake County have a wealth of opportunities to green their thumbs thanks to a blossoming partnership between the Lake County Master Gardeners and the Mentor Public Library. A series of workshops scheduled throughout April and May promise to nurture gardening skills for all levels, from novice beginners to seasoned horticulturalists.

The collaboration aims to expand access to vital gardening knowledge, fostering a more sustainable and vibrant community. These aren't just lectures; the programs are designed to be hands-on and interactive, providing participants with practical skills they can immediately implement in their own gardens. This year's offerings focus on core gardening principles, aligning with a growing public interest in local food production, environmental stewardship, and the therapeutic benefits of connecting with nature.

The series kicks off on April 14th at 7 p.m. with "Seed Starting for Beginners." This workshop will delve into the fundamentals of starting plants from seed, covering everything from seed selection and soil preparation to optimal growing conditions and transplanting techniques. Participants will learn how to avoid common pitfalls and maximize their success rate, ensuring a strong start to the growing season.

Next up, on April 28th at 7 p..m., is "Composting 101." Composting is becoming increasingly recognized as a crucial element of sustainable gardening. This program will demystify the process, teaching participants how to turn kitchen scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich soil amendment. Experts will cover different composting methods, including traditional pile composting, bin composting, and vermicomposting (using worms!). Attendees will discover how composting reduces landfill waste, enriches soil health, and lessens the need for chemical fertilizers.

The series continues into May, with a focus on bringing the garden to life. "Vegetable Gardening" on May 5th at 7 p.m. will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to plan, plant, and maintain a productive vegetable garden. Topics will include site selection, soil preparation, companion planting, pest and disease management, and harvesting techniques. The workshop will emphasize organic and sustainable gardening practices.

Finally, on May 12th at 7 p.m., "Gardening for Pollinators" will highlight the vital role pollinators play in our ecosystem and how to create a garden that attracts and supports bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. This program will cover plant selection, habitat creation, and the avoidance of harmful pesticides, contributing to a healthier and more resilient local environment.
