Madison Expands Free Radon Test Kit Program for All Residents
Locale: UNITED STATES

Madison, CT - April 1st, 2026 - The Madison Health Department today announced an expansion of its free radon test kit program, offering the kits to all residents in an effort to combat the silent threat of radon gas exposure. Building on the success of previous initiatives, the department is emphasizing the critical importance of radon testing, particularly in light of new data highlighting the increasing prevalence of elevated radon levels in homes across the state.
Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, remains the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths each year. The gas seeps into homes from the ground, through cracks and gaps in foundations, and can accumulate to dangerous levels, especially during colder months when homes are sealed up. Its insidious nature - being odorless, colorless, and tasteless - makes it impossible to detect without specialized testing.
"We've seen a consistent need for radon testing in Madison, and the number of homes testing positive for high radon levels is concerning," stated Sandra Rousseau, Madison Health Director. "That's why we are proactively making these kits readily available to all residents. Early detection is crucial, and mitigation is highly effective in reducing radon exposure."
The current initiative isn't simply a continuation of the existing program, but a response to a recent statewide study conducted by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH). The study, released last month, revealed that approximately 30% of homes tested across the state exhibited radon levels exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) action level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Several towns in the shoreline region, including Madison, showed significantly higher rates than the state average, potentially due to the area's unique geological composition and building styles.
The free test kits are available for pickup at the Madison Health Department, located at 525 Boston Post Road, and can also be requested via phone at (203) 245-5950. The kits are easy to use and involve a simple two-day process of placing the detector in the lowest livable level of the home. After the testing period, residents mail the kit to a certified laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within several weeks and are kept strictly confidential.
While the Health Department provides the testing free of charge, mitigation - the process of reducing radon levels - is the responsibility of the homeowner. However, the department offers resources and a list of certified radon mitigation contractors to assist residents in addressing any issues identified during testing. Several state and federal programs also offer financial assistance for radon mitigation, particularly for low-income homeowners.
"Don't delay," urges Rousseau. "Radon exposure is a serious health risk, but it's also preventable. Testing is the first step towards protecting your family's health. We are also partnering with local real estate agents to encourage radon testing during home sales, ensuring that potential buyers are fully informed."
Experts recommend that all homes be tested for radon at least every two years, and whenever significant changes are made to the home's foundation or heating/cooling systems. The CT DPH website ([ https://portal.ct.gov/dph/environmental-health/radon ]) provides comprehensive information about radon, testing procedures, mitigation techniques, and available resources. The EPA also offers detailed guidance on its website ([ https://www.epa.gov/radon ]). This expanded program in Madison aims to be a model for other municipalities in Connecticut, demonstrating a proactive approach to public health and a commitment to protecting residents from the dangers of radon exposure. The Madison Health Department plans to report on the results of the expanded testing program in six months, hoping to demonstrate a significant increase in awareness and mitigation efforts within the community.
