Greenwich Hospital Breaks Ground on $400M Smilow Cancer Center

GREENWICH, CT - April 2nd, 2026 - Greenwich Hospital celebrated a momentous occasion today with the official groundbreaking of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital. The $400 million project, a significant expansion of the Yale New Haven Health Smilow Cancer Network, promises to redefine cancer care access and quality for Greenwich and the wider Fairfield County region. The ceremony, held this morning on the hospital grounds, drew local dignitaries, hospital administrators, medical professionals, and key philanthropic supporters.
For years, residents of Greenwich and surrounding towns have often traveled significant distances to New Haven or other major metropolitan areas for comprehensive cancer treatment. This new facility aims to directly address that challenge, providing cutting-edge, multidisciplinary care within the community. The hospital anticipates serving a dramatically increased number of patients, reducing wait times, and improving outcomes through early detection and innovative therapies.
"Today isn't just about breaking ground; it's about building hope," declared Diane Kelly, President and CEO of Greenwich Hospital, during the ceremony. "This new Smilow Cancer Hospital represents a commitment to our community - a promise to deliver world-class cancer expertise and technology right here, close to home. We envision a future where individuals facing cancer can receive the best possible care without the burden of extensive travel."
The new facility will encompass a comprehensive range of cancer services, integrating all aspects of diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care under one roof. Key departments will include dedicated centers for radiation oncology, medical oncology, and surgical oncology. Advanced imaging capabilities, including PET/CT and MRI, will facilitate precise diagnoses and treatment planning. Importantly, the hospital will also offer comprehensive genetic counseling services, recognizing the growing importance of personalized medicine in cancer care.
Dr. Marc Kominsky, Physician-in-Chief of the Smilow Cancer Network, emphasized the collaborative spirit driving the project. "This is a network-wide initiative, leveraging the collective expertise and resources of Yale New Haven Health," he explained. "Greenwich Hospital will seamlessly integrate with the existing Smilow Cancer Network, ensuring patients benefit from the latest research, clinical trials, and best practices. The ability to offer clinical trials locally is a game changer for many patients, allowing them to participate in groundbreaking research without the added stress of travel."
The $400 million investment extends beyond bricks and mortar. The project is expected to create hundreds of new, highly skilled jobs in the region, boosting the local economy. These positions will range from oncologists and nurses to radiation therapists, medical technicians, and support staff. Greenwich Hospital is actively partnering with local educational institutions to develop training programs ensuring a robust pipeline of qualified professionals.
The project has been fueled by a substantial philanthropic campaign, demonstrating strong community support. Donors have contributed generously to help realize the vision of a state-of-the-art cancer center. Hospital officials have repeatedly acknowledged the importance of this support, stating that private donations will be instrumental in funding specialized equipment, patient support programs, and research initiatives.
Beyond the medical advancements, the design of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital prioritizes the patient experience. Plans include spacious and comfortable patient rooms, dedicated areas for family support, and tranquil outdoor spaces designed to promote healing and well-being. The hospital is committed to creating a welcoming and compassionate environment, recognizing the emotional and psychological challenges faced by cancer patients and their families.
The completion of the new Smilow Cancer Hospital is anticipated in the fall of 2028. Hospital officials have promised to keep the community updated on the construction progress through regular announcements and online resources. This project represents a transformative investment in the health and well-being of the region and solidifies Greenwich Hospital's position as a leading provider of cancer care.
