Smartwatches and fitness trackers might pose health risks due to high levels of PFHxA, a chemical found in the fluorinated rubber used in premium wristbands. These findings highlight potential skin exposure concerns from daily wearable tech.

A recent study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology has revealed that many popular smartwatch wristbands contain high levels of bisphenols and phthalates, known as "forever chemicals" due to their persistence in the environment and the body. These chemicals, which include BPA and DEHP, are linked to various health issues such as reproductive problems, developmental issues, and increased cancer risk. The research, conducted by a team from the University of California, San Francisco, tested 30 wristbands from brands like Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit, finding that 80% of them had these harmful substances. Notably, wristbands made from rubber, silicone, and plastic were the most contaminated, while metal and leather bands showed lower or no levels of these chemicals. The study underscores the need for consumers to be aware of the materials in their wearable devices and calls for manufacturers to explore safer alternatives.
