LOUISVILLE, Ky.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--No matter where convention-goers sit on the political spectrum, they enthusiastically agreed on one important issue over the past two weeks: Freewheelin, the pedal-powered bike bus program provided to each convention host city by health and well-being company [ Humana Inc. ] (NYSE: HUM), was a hit.

Freewheelin provided pedal buses to the Republican National Convention (RNC), held in Tampa from Aug. 27-30; and the Democratic National Convention (DNC), held in Charlotte from Sept. 3-6. Each pedal bus, which accommodated up to eight people and a driver provided by Freewheelin, offered a healthy, fun and environmentally friendly way to get around each host city. The buses followed pre-set routes and made stops close to the convention perimeter and popular downtown destinations.
Over the two weeks of the conventions, Freewheelin participants from across the nation:
- Took 2,583 rides
- Pedaled 1,849 miles
- Participated in 667 blood pressure and health screenings
- Consumed more than 6,800 eight-ounce servings of water
- Ate nearly 2,100 pieces of fruit
To continue the Freewheelin legacy, Humana donated five pedal buses and one fruit cart each to the Tampa Downtown Partnership (RNC) and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation (DNC) in Charlotte.

The Freewheelin Story
The Freewheelin pedal bus program was the evolution of the Freewheelin bike-sharing initiative that began as an employee program at Humanaas Louisville campus in 2007. Humana then went on to introduce large-scale bike-sharing to the nation at the 2008 political conventions. In partnership with Bikes Belong, the nationas leading bicycling-advocacy organization, Freewheelin took 1,000 bikes and multiple bike stations to Denver for the DNC and Minneapolis-St. Paul for the RNC, supplying individuals with easy and free access to bicycles.
