MILWAUKEE - February 1st, 2026 - Milwaukee County concluded its first-ever Winter Wellness Week yesterday, February 4th, an initiative hailed by residents and local businesses as a much-needed boost during the traditionally challenging winter months. Launched on January 29th, the week-long event saw 18 downtown businesses collaborate with the county to offer a diverse range of activities and discounts designed to combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), promote mental well-being, and encourage physical activity.

The concept, championed by Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and spearheaded by Tiffany O'Neal, Director of Health, arose from a growing recognition of the detrimental effects of Wisconsin's long winters on public health. Studies consistently demonstrate a correlation between limited sunlight and decreased mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. Crowley stated at the launch event, "We know that winter can be a tough time for many people. We don't just want to acknowledge that, we want to actively offer resources and opportunities to support our residents' health and resilience during this season."

This year's program wasn't merely a collection of discounts. Participating businesses curated a thoughtfully designed program including everything from invigorating fitness classes at local gyms like Brew City Fitness (offering 20% off new memberships throughout the week) and yoga sessions at Zen Den studio, to restorative spa treatments at The Lakeside Wellness Center. Food played a significant role as well, with several restaurants - notably Roots Organic and The Green Plate - offering specially designed "Wellness Bowls" featuring nutrient-rich ingredients known to boost mood and immunity. Perhaps most importantly, the event included several mindfulness and mental health workshops.

"It's really about encouraging people to take care of themselves, to be mindful of their mental and physical health, and to find joy in the season," explained O'Neal. "We wanted to move beyond simply treating symptoms and foster preventative care, building habits that residents can carry with them throughout the year." Workshops focused on topics like stress management, meditation, and recognizing the signs of seasonal depression were particularly well-attended, highlighting a clear demand for mental health resources within the community.

The success of the inaugural Winter Wellness Week has prompted Milwaukee County to consider expanding the program in future years. Initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents praising the variety of offerings and the collaborative spirit of the event. Social media was abuzz with participants sharing their experiences using the hashtag #MKEWinterWellness, demonstrating a high level of community engagement.

Beyond the immediate benefits of the week itself, the initiative underscores a larger trend toward prioritizing holistic health at the county level. O'Neal confirmed that Winter Wellness Week is part of a broader, year-round effort to support community health and well-being. This includes increased investment in mental health services, expansion of park and recreation programs, and continued partnerships with local businesses to promote healthy lifestyles.

The county is already exploring potential expansions for next year, including a broader geographic reach beyond downtown Milwaukee, increased accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and the integration of telehealth options for those unable to attend in-person events. There's also discussion of incorporating educational components focused on understanding SAD and its management, empowering residents to proactively address their mental health needs. Several organizations, including the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, have expressed interest in learning from Milwaukee's model, potentially leading to the implementation of similar programs in other communities across the state. The initiative's success proves that a targeted, community-driven approach can be highly effective in addressing the challenges of winter wellness, and lays a strong foundation for a healthier, more resilient Milwaukee County.
