Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Offered
Locale: UNITED STATES

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training, designed to equip community members - parents, teachers, coaches, and concerned citizens - with the skills to recognize the signs of mental health struggles in young people and offer initial support. This program aims to break down barriers to communication and encourage early intervention, which is often critical in improving outcomes.
Recognizing the need for immediate assistance in crisis situations, MCPH is also expanding its Mobile Crisis Response Team. This team will consist of trained mental health professionals capable of responding to mental health emergencies in the community, providing on-site support and de-escalation services. This expansion addresses a critical gap in access to care, particularly for individuals experiencing acute mental health crises who may not know where to turn.
Beyond immediate crisis intervention, MCPH is investing in preventative measures. Substance Abuse Prevention Programs will provide education and resources aimed at preventing substance abuse among both youth and adults, recognizing the strong link between substance abuse and mental health disorders. These programs will focus on promoting healthy coping mechanisms and building resilience.
Access to care is also being dramatically improved through Telehealth Expansion. This initiative leverages technology to provide mental health services remotely, overcoming geographical barriers and increasing accessibility for residents in rural areas or those with limited mobility. Telehealth offers a convenient and confidential way for individuals to connect with mental health professionals from the comfort of their own homes.
The success of these initiatives hinges on a fundamental shift in community attitudes towards mental health. MCPH is launching public awareness campaigns to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage open conversations about mental wellbeing. They aim to normalize seeking help and foster a more supportive and understanding community where individuals feel comfortable prioritizing their mental health.
Dr. Carter concluded, "This isn't something we can do alone. It takes a community effort to truly address the behavioral health needs of our residents." The department urges all residents to be aware of the resources available, to prioritize their mental health, and to support efforts to create a more mentally healthy Mesa County. More detailed information about these programs and available resources can be found on the Mesa County Public Health website: [ www.mesacounty.gov/publichealth ].
