EDISON, NJ - March 11, 2026 - What began as a single free CPR demonstration at the Edison Public Library during American Heart Month in 2024 has blossomed into a comprehensive, community-wide initiative focused on increasing cardiac arrest survival rates. The initial 2024 event, held on March 17th, proved remarkably popular, highlighting a growing public awareness and desire to be prepared for medical emergencies. Today, the Edison Public Library remains a central hub, but the program has expanded significantly thanks to increased funding and collaborative efforts with local hospitals and emergency medical services.

Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives annually. While advancements in cardiology have improved treatment options, the crucial minutes before professional help arrives often determine the outcome for individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA occurs when the heart abruptly stops beating, cutting off blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. Without immediate intervention, brain damage and death are likely within minutes.

This reality is what prompted the Edison Public Library's initial foray into CPR training. The library saw an opportunity to empower community members with the skills to potentially save a life. However, the initial single demonstration quickly proved insufficient to meet the demand. "We were overwhelmed by the positive response," recalls Sarah Chen, Director of Community Outreach at the Edison Public Library. "People weren't just interested in attending; they wanted ongoing training, refresher courses, and even advanced techniques."

In response, the library partnered with St. Jude's Hospital and the Edison Township Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This collaboration allowed for the creation of a tiered training program. The free, introductory CPR demonstration, still held monthly, focuses on adult CPR, utilizing manikins and simplified instructions. Participants learn the basics of chest compressions and rescue breathing.

Beyond the basic demonstration, St. Jude's now offers monthly certification courses - Heartsaver CPR AED - at the library, covering adult, child, and infant CPR, as well as the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are portable devices that can deliver an electric shock to the heart, restoring a normal rhythm. The EMS department provides instructors for these courses, ensuring the highest quality of training. Crucially, these certification courses are offered at a significantly subsidized rate thanks to a grant secured by the library and St. Jude's.

The expansion hasn't stopped there. Recognizing the importance of maintaining skills, the library now hosts quarterly "CPR Refresh" sessions - free, shorter workshops designed to reinforce learned techniques and address any questions. Furthermore, a new initiative, launched in late 2025, has placed AEDs in several key locations throughout Edison Township, including the library, community centers, and local parks. These locations are clearly marked with signage and are accessible to the public.

Data collected from the EMS department reveals a noticeable increase in bystander intervention rates in cases of suspected SCA since the program's expansion. While precise statistics are still being compiled, preliminary figures show a 15% increase in citizens initiating CPR before the arrival of paramedics. This translates directly to improved survival rates, a fact that officials celebrate.

Looking ahead, the Edison Public Library and its partners plan to expand the program further, incorporating training on recognizing the signs of a stroke and providing basic first aid for other common emergencies. They are also exploring the possibility of offering specialized training for school staff and community organizations. The goal is clear: to create a community where everyone feels empowered to act confidently and effectively in a medical emergency. As Chen emphasizes, "Saving a life isn't just for medical professionals. It's something anyone can learn to do, and we're committed to making that learning accessible to everyone in Edison."
