Aldi Partners with Fareshare to Tackle UK Food Waste
Locale: UNITED KINGDOM

Tuesday, March 24th, 2026 - Aldi, the discount supermarket chain, today announced a significant expansion of its food waste reduction program through a new partnership with Fareshare, the UK's national network of charitable food redistributors. The initiative aims to address the escalating issue of food waste while simultaneously bolstering support for vulnerable communities across the nation.
Food waste remains a colossal problem globally, with a substantial portion of produced food never reaching a plate. In the UK alone, millions of tonnes of edible food are discarded annually, contributing to environmental damage through greenhouse gas emissions and representing a significant economic loss. While consumer-level waste often takes the spotlight, a considerable amount occurs further up the supply chain - within supermarkets, distribution centres, and farms.
Aldi's collaboration with Fareshare is a direct response to this challenge. Building upon the supermarket's existing commitment to charitable giving - having already donated over 2.6 million meals through its partnership with the Community Food Foundation - this new initiative will see surplus edible food from Aldi stores nationwide redistributed to a network of over 2,000 charities and community groups. Fareshare acts as the vital link, efficiently collecting this surplus food and delivering it to organisations that provide meals and support to individuals and families facing food insecurity.
"We're committed to reducing food waste and supporting the communities we serve," stated Julie Kerr, Corporate Social Responsibility Director at Aldi. "This new initiative with Fareshare is a fantastic way to do both. It allows us to divert perfectly good food from going to waste and ensures it reaches those who need it most."
Fareshare's established infrastructure and logistical expertise are crucial to the program's success. The charity specialises in handling large volumes of food, ensuring its safe storage, and efficient delivery. Its extensive network allows for broad geographical coverage, meaning Aldi's surplus can benefit communities in both urban and rural areas. The organisation currently provides over 157,000 meals to people in need every day, a figure they are hoping to significantly increase with Aldi's support.
Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive Officer of Fareshare, echoed the sentiment, saying, "We are delighted to be partnering with Aldi to get even more surplus food to charities and community groups across the UK. This will make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people and will help us to reduce food waste."
Beyond Redistribution: A Holistic Approach to Food Waste
While the Fareshare partnership is a critical step, experts emphasize that tackling food waste requires a multi-faceted approach. Aldi, like many leading supermarkets, is also investing in technologies and strategies to minimize waste before it reaches the surplus stage. These include improved stock management systems, more accurate forecasting of demand, and offering flexible date labels to avoid premature discarding of products.
The initiative comes at a time when the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact households across the UK, exacerbating food poverty. The increased availability of redistributed food will provide a much-needed lifeline for many individuals and families struggling to afford basic necessities.
Furthermore, the program aligns with growing consumer demand for sustainable practices. Shoppers are increasingly conscious of the environmental and social impact of their purchasing decisions, and companies that demonstrate a commitment to reducing waste and supporting their communities are likely to gain customer loyalty.
Looking ahead, both Aldi and Fareshare are exploring opportunities to expand the initiative further. Potential areas of development include increasing the range of products redistributed, improving packaging solutions to minimise waste during transport, and raising public awareness about the importance of reducing food waste at all levels.
