Aurora ICE Detention Center Report Reveals Systemic Healthcare Failures
Locale: UNITED STATES

Aurora, Colorado - March 27th, 2026 - A damning independent investigation into healthcare practices at the Aurora ICE Detention Center has revealed a pattern of systemic failures, contributing to preventable harm and, in at least one documented case, death. The report, released today by the Independent Correctional Oversight Collective (ICOC), paints a disturbing picture of inadequate medical screening, chronically delayed treatment, and alarmingly insufficient staff training within the facility. The ICOC's findings are fueling renewed calls for comprehensive reform and independent oversight of healthcare provision for immigration detainees.
The investigation, triggered by the death of 42-year-old Guatemalan national Marco Antonio Perez Ramirez in November 2025 and a surge in related lawsuits, meticulously examined medical records dating back three years. Investigators conducted over 150 interviews with both current and former detention center staff, as well as over 75 interviews with detainees currently and previously held at Aurora. Policies, procedures, and resource allocation were all scrutinized, revealing a deeply flawed system prioritizing cost-cutting over patient wellbeing.
"What we uncovered wasn't a series of isolated mistakes, but a deliberate and consistent pattern of neglect," stated Dr. Eleanor Vance, lead investigator for the ICOC. "Detainees routinely reported being denied timely access to medical professionals, experiencing significant delays in receiving necessary medication, and being subjected to inadequate assessments of their physical and mental health. The lack of specialized care for common chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and mental health disorders was particularly concerning. We observed a disturbing disregard for basic standards of medical care."
The report details how initial medical screenings upon detainee arrival were often perfunctory, failing to identify pre-existing conditions or emerging health concerns. Follow-up care was frequently delayed due to chronic understaffing, with a ratio of one medical professional to over 300 detainees reported during peak occupancy. This shortage meant that even obvious symptoms were often overlooked or dismissed, leading to the exacerbation of treatable illnesses. Several testimonies described detainees self-treating with over-the-counter remedies due to the inability to access medical attention.
The death of Marco Antonio Perez Ramirez serves as a harrowing case study in the report. Mr. Perez Ramirez died from complications related to a perforated appendix, a condition that, according to the ICOC, could have been successfully treated had he received prompt medical evaluation and intervention. The investigation found that Mr. Perez Ramirez repeatedly complained of severe abdominal pain for over 72 hours before finally being seen by a doctor, at which point it was too late. His family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Aurora ICE and the private healthcare provider contracted to service the facility.
Aurora City Council member, Sarah Chen, responded to the report with a statement demanding accountability. "This is a devastating indictment of the current system. We entrusted the care of vulnerable individuals to ICE and its contracted healthcare provider, and they have demonstrably failed. The City Council will be holding emergency sessions to discuss potential legal action and advocate for immediate, meaningful change."
The ICOC report recommends a multi-faceted approach to reform, including a significant increase in medical staffing, implementation of standardized medical protocols, mandatory comprehensive training for all staff (medical and detention), and the establishment of an independent oversight board with the authority to conduct unannounced inspections and review medical records. The board should include medical professionals, legal experts, and representatives from detainee advocacy groups. The report also stresses the need for improved communication channels between medical staff, detention officers, and detainees.
While ICE officials have acknowledged receipt of the report and pledged to review its findings, advocacy groups like the National Immigration Justice Center (NIJC) are skeptical. "ICE has a long history of paying lip service to reform while continuing to prioritize detention over the wellbeing of those in its custody," said Maria Rodriguez, a spokesperson for NIJC. "We demand more than just a review. We demand immediate action, including the suspension of ICE operations at the Aurora facility until all of the ICOC's recommendations are fully implemented and independently verified." The NIJC is organizing a protest outside the Aurora facility next week, calling for a complete overhaul of the system and greater transparency regarding healthcare practices.
The Aurora ICE Detention Center controversy highlights a broader national debate concerning the quality of healthcare provided to immigration detainees. Critics argue that the current system incentivizes cost-cutting at the expense of patient care, and that the lack of independent oversight creates a breeding ground for abuse and neglect. The ICOC report serves as a stark warning that without significant reform, the cycle of preventable harm and death within ICE detention facilities will continue.
