IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - November 13, 2009) - Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE: [ EW ]), the global leader in the science of heart valves and hemodynamic monitoring, is recognizing the contributions of the late William Ganz, M.D., former senior research scientist and staff physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and co-inventor of the Edwards Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheter. Dr. Ganz passed away earlier this week at the age of 90.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Ganz, a true medical technology innovator and trusted partner to our company," said Michael A. Mussallem, Edwards Lifesciences' chairman and CEO. "His research led to the development of the pulmonary artery catheter, which has helped physicians treat millions of patients around the world for the past 40 years. His selfless dedication to medical science and patient care will serve as an inspiration for generations to come."

In honor of Dr. Ganz, Edwards Lifesciences has made a donation to the American Heart Association in his name.

In 1968, Ganz and his colleague, the late Jeremy Swan, M.D., former director of the cardiology division at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, invented the pulmonary artery catheter, which provides measurements of a patient's cardiovascular performance during heart surgery, in intensive care units and in other critical care settings. The device has helped clinicians monitor and evaluate more than 30 million patients since it first became commercially available in the 1970s.
