Cubist Pharmaceuticals and the New England Patriots Radio Network Recognize Innovative Science Teachers
LEXINGTON, Mass.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBST) today announced that its partnership with the New England Patriots Radio Network, WBZ FM 98.5 The Sports Hub, to recognize innovative science teachers in middle schools and high schools throughout New England selected 11 science "Teachers of the Week" during the course of the football season. The season's winning teacher, who was recognized at the Dec. 27th game, is Jennifer Adams of Cumberland, Rhode Island. Ms. Adams teaches at the King Philip Middle School in Norfolk, Mass. The school's science department will receive a $500 check from Cubist after the football season, when a Patriots alumni player and a representative from Cubist will visit the King Philip Middle School. Before Sunday's game Ms. Adams met the Patriots broadcasters.
"The quality of the entries during the season was superb. There are clearly many teachers who are demonstrating leadership and innovation in the classroom, and we are pleased to be able to support their dedication with the Cubist Science Education Leadership Award."
Ms. Adams involves her students in designing lesson plans and labs, and she makes science come alive with innovative demonstrations that include having students simulate faults in the earth's crust with modeling clay, using gummy worms to illustrate cell transport, and using vanilla wafer cookies, frosting and sprinkles to model the stages of cell division. Her project-based science teaching offers opportunities to challenge students on different levels and increases their level of inquiry-based science thinking.
Throughout the season, Cubist and the New England Patriots Radio Network have recognized science teachers leading the way in the classroom. Each week, during the New England Patriots season, a teacher was selected as the Cubist Pharmaceuticals "Teacher of the Week" and announced during the New England Patriots radio broadcast. In addition to Ms. Adams, the weekly qualifiers were Craig Berriault, Erick Varney, Raymond Sleeper, Nina Rooks Cast, Raymond Whitehouse, Seth Andrews, Cynthia Quaratiello, Martha Dion, Valerie Franks, and Eric Hanson.
Cubist President and CEO Michael Bonney said, "The quality of the entries during the season was superb. There are clearly many teachers who are demonstrating leadership and innovation in the classroom, and we are pleased to be able to support their dedication with the Cubist Science Education Leadership Award."
