Lower FIT Cutoffs Could Cut Costs of CRC Screening

  • FITs have lower sensitivity than multitarget stool DNA tests, but a large cost difference suggests finding ways to increase the use of FITs.

The article from Medscape discusses a study suggesting that lowering the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) cutoffs could enhance the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. The research, presented at the American College of Gastroenterology 2023 annual meeting, indicates that by reducing the FIT threshold from 20 µg/g to 10 µg/g, the sensitivity for detecting CRC could increase from 79% to 88%, and the number of colonoscopies needed could decrease by 13%. This adjustment could lead to earlier detection of CRC, potentially reducing healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes. The study emphasizes the importance of optimizing screening strategies to balance sensitivity, specificity, and resource utilization in CRC screening programs.
