SpectraScience to Exhibit WavSTAT4 Optical Biopsy System at Digestive Disease Week Conference May 19-22 in San Diego

Academic Research Presentations to Include Data From Clinical Studies Using WavSTAT to Diagnose Colorectal and Esophageal Cancer

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - May 18, 2012) - SpectraScience, Inc. (OTCQB: [ SCIE ]) (PINKSHEETS: [ SCIE ]), a San Diego based medical device company, is exhibiting its WavSTAT4 Optical Biopsy System at the Digestive Disease Week Conference (DDW) May 19-22, 2012 at the San Diego Convention Center. Company representatives will be on hand at booth #2229 to demonstrate the functionality and benefits of WavSTAT technology as an adjunct to current endoscopic diagnostic procedures, particularly for colorectal and esophageal cancer.

SpectraScience's Chief Executive Officer Michael Oliver stated, "We look forward to DDW and meeting with practitioners who can benefit from our WavSTAT technology. We are also very pleased to have leading research teams presenting data that demonstrates WavSTAT's ability to diagnose and distinguish cancerous tissue, and discuss their plans for continued research to advance the technology. DDW is an important industry and professional event, and our high visibility at this year's conference reflects the strong interest in WavSTAT and its potential for improving cancer diagnosis."

WavSTAT technology and laser-induced autofluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) will be discussed in presentations of clinical data by researchers, including:

  • "Fluorescence Spectroscopy Incorporated in an Optical Biopsy System (OBS) for the Detection of Early Neoplasia in Barrett's Esophagus (BE)." This live presentation on Sunday, May 20 at 4:45 p.m. by David Boerwinkel, MD (Dept. of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), provides results of endoscopies on 32 patients with Barrett's esophagus in which areas suspicious for neoplasia and endoscopically inconspicuous areas were imaged with the WavSTAT OBS, followed by a correlating physical biopsy with the optical biopsy forceps for histological evaluation.

  • "Differentiation of Small Colorectal Lesions; Laser-Induced Autofluorescence Using the Wavstat." This poster presentation reports on a current study assessing the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of an algorithm combining white light (WL) in high confidence lesions and WavSTAT in low confidence lesions.

About SpectraScience, Inc.

SpectraScience is a San Diego based medical device company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets light-based analysis systems capable of determining whether tissue is normal, pre-cancerous or cancerous without physically removing tissue from the body. The WavSTAT Optical Biopsy System uses light to optically diagnose tissue and provide the physician with an immediate analysis. With FDA approval for sale in the U.S. and the CE Mark for the European Union, the WavSTAT System is the first commercially available product that incorporates this innovative technology for clinical use.

About Digestive Disease Week

DDW is the world's largest gathering of physicians and researchers in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, and gastrointestinal surgery. The conference is jointly sponsored by four societies: the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).
