Baptist Health Restarts Stroke Support Groups

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - February 17th, 2026 - Baptist Health has announced the resumption of its vital stroke support groups, providing a crucial resource for individuals navigating the complex journey of stroke recovery, alongside the family members and caregivers who support them. After a temporary hiatus, the program is back with a revised schedule and a convenient new location, reaffirming Baptist Health's commitment to comprehensive stroke care beyond acute treatment.

The support groups will now convene at the Baptist Health Medical Group building, located at 9000 Baymeadows Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32256. This centralized location aims to improve accessibility for patients and caregivers throughout the Jacksonville community.

"We recognize that recovering from a stroke is rarely a linear process; it's often a marathon, not a sprint," explains Karen Paletta, Program Coordinator for Baptist Health's Stroke Support Program. "Beyond the immediate medical intervention, a strong support network is absolutely essential for emotional wellbeing, motivation, and ultimately, achieving the best possible quality of life. These groups offer that crucial connection."

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, and the impact extends far beyond the individual who has experienced the event. Family members and caregivers frequently face significant emotional, physical, and financial burdens. The Baptist Health Stroke Support Program addresses this holistic need by offering dedicated groups tailored to specific experiences.

The program's carefully structured approach divides participants into three core categories: Stroke Survivors, Caregivers, and a General Support group that fosters open communication between all involved. This targeted approach ensures that individuals can connect with others who understand their unique challenges and share similar experiences.

The Stroke Survivors group provides a safe space for those recovering from stroke to discuss their physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. Members can share strategies for adapting to new limitations, celebrating small victories, and addressing ongoing concerns. The program emphasizes peer-to-peer learning, where survivors learn from each other's successes and setbacks, building resilience and hope.

The Caregivers group addresses the often-overlooked needs of those providing round-the-clock support. Caregivers frequently experience stress, burnout, and isolation. This group offers a platform for sharing these burdens, accessing resources for self-care, and learning effective coping mechanisms. The discussions often cover practical topics like navigating healthcare systems, managing medications, and advocating for the needs of their loved one.

The General Support group facilitates a broader dialogue, allowing stroke survivors, family members, and caregivers to connect, share perspectives, and build a unified support system. This inclusive environment encourages empathy and understanding, helping everyone involved navigate the emotional complexities of stroke recovery.

The new meeting schedule is designed to accommodate a variety of needs and commitments:

  • Stroke Survivors: First Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.
  • Caregivers: Second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.
  • General Support: Third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

Facilitation is provided by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals - including nurses, therapists, and social workers - as well as trained volunteers. This ensures that groups are led by individuals with a deep understanding of stroke recovery and the emotional landscape surrounding it. The focus remains on creating a confidential and non-judgmental environment where participants feel comfortable sharing their stories and seeking support.

Beyond these regular meetings, Baptist Health's Stroke Support Program also offers occasional workshops and educational seminars on topics such as stroke prevention, healthy living, and accessing community resources. The program is constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of the community it serves.
