Garmin Lets Users Plan Routes Directly on Watches & Computers
Locales: UNITED STATES, SWITZERLAND

Wednesday, February 25th, 2026 - Garmin, the global leader in GPS technology and wearable devices, has today unveiled a significant update to its platform, fundamentally changing how users plan and execute their running and cycling adventures. The newly released feature allows users to create, modify, and download courses directly onto their Garmin watches and Edge cycling computers without the need for a computer or smartphone connection. This move dramatically simplifies the route planning process and signals a shift towards truly independent operation for Garmin's popular devices.
For years, Garmin users have relied on pairing their devices with computers or smartphones to plan routes using platforms like Garmin Connect. While functional, this process often involved multiple steps: creating a route on a larger screen, syncing it to the device, and then hoping everything transferred correctly. The new on-device course creation feature eliminates these friction points, offering a seamless and intuitive experience directly on the wrist or handlebar.
"We listened to our users," explained Amelia Chen, Lead Product Manager at Garmin, in a press briefing this morning. "They told us they wanted the freedom to explore and plan routes on the go, without being tethered to another device. This feature delivers on that promise, empowering users to adapt to spontaneous adventures and discover new paths with ease."
The feature allows users to search for pre-made courses within the Garmin ecosystem, or to create their own from scratch. Users can draw routes directly on the watch or Edge screen using a touch interface, pinpointing desired locations and customizing the path. Existing routes can also be modified on the device, allowing for real-time adjustments based on conditions or preferences. The improved mapping capabilities within the device interface also allow for easier visualization of elevation profiles, points of interest, and potential hazards.
Initially, the update is rolling out to Garmin's latest generation of devices, including the Forerunner 965, Epix Pro series, and Edge 840/1040 Solar. These devices boast the processing power and screen real estate necessary for a smooth and responsive on-device experience. However, Garmin has committed to expanding support to older models "where technically feasible." A company spokesperson confirmed they are actively assessing the capabilities of older hardware and software to determine which devices will receive the update. Users are encouraged to check the Garmin website for compatibility information specific to their device.
The implications of this update extend beyond simple convenience. It caters to a growing demand for self-sufficiency and immersive experiences among outdoor enthusiasts. Runners and cyclists can now venture further afield, confident in their ability to navigate and adapt to changing circumstances without relying on a mobile signal or battery-draining smartphone. This feature also holds considerable appeal for adventure racers and ultra-endurance athletes who prioritize minimalism and reliability.
Industry analysts predict this move will further solidify Garmin's dominance in the wearable and cycling computer markets. "Garmin consistently demonstrates a commitment to user experience and innovation," says David Lee, a tech analyst at Horizon Research Group. "By streamlining the course planning process, they've removed a significant barrier to entry for new users and enhanced the value proposition for existing ones."
The company is also teasing future integrations, hinting at the possibility of importing GPX files directly onto the device via Bluetooth from other sources, and improved social features allowing users to share custom routes with friends and communities. Furthermore, there's speculation about the integration of AI-powered route suggestions based on user preferences and terrain data.
This new feature is available immediately as a software update. Garmin Connect users will receive a notification within their app prompting them to download the latest version. Garmin's support website provides comprehensive tutorials and FAQs to guide users through the new functionality. The era of desktop-dependent route planning is officially over, replaced by a future of on-device freedom and limitless exploration.
