Milwaukee Launches First Winter Wellness Week
CBS 58 NewsLocale: UNITED STATES

Milwaukee, WI - February 18th, 2026 - As the heart of winter grips Milwaukee, Milwaukee Downtown, BID #2, is proactively addressing the challenges many face during the colder months with the launch of its first annual Winter Wellness Week, running today through February 24th, 2026. The initiative aims to bolster both physical and mental wellbeing for residents and visitors alike, offering a comprehensive program of events and special offers centered around health and self-care.
"We know winter can be a challenging time for many, and we want to provide opportunities for people to prioritize their physical and mental health," explained Lisa Wittrup, Milwaukee Downtown BID #2 Executive Director. "Winter Wellness Week is about more than just surviving the season; it's about thriving. It's about intentionally creating moments of peace, rejuvenation, and connection during a time when those things can often feel elusive."
The concept behind Winter Wellness Week stems from a growing understanding of the impact of seasonal changes on mental and physical health. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to changes in seasons, affects millions. Symptoms can include fatigue, increased appetite for carbohydrates, weight gain, and a general feeling of sadness. Beyond SAD, the reduced daylight hours, colder temperatures, and tendency for increased indoor activity can lead to decreased physical activity, social isolation, and a decline in overall wellbeing.
Milwaukee Downtown's response is a multi-faceted approach, partnering with local businesses to curate a diverse range of wellness experiences. Participants are offering specials designed to cater to a variety of needs and interests. The offerings aren't limited to traditional wellness activities; they are intentionally broad to encourage diverse participation. Current offerings include guided yoga and meditation sessions held in unique downtown spaces, healthy and locally-sourced meal options at participating restaurants, and deeply relaxing spa treatments designed to melt away winter stress. Several businesses are also incorporating mindful movement workshops, such as Tai Chi and gentle stretching, into their schedules.
Beyond the immediate benefits of these activities, Winter Wellness Week fosters a stronger sense of community. The program provides opportunities for people to connect with others who share an interest in health and wellbeing. Group fitness classes, communal meditation sessions, and wellness workshops create a supportive environment where individuals can share experiences and build relationships.
The initiative also benefits local businesses. By attracting foot traffic and showcasing their wellness offerings, Winter Wellness Week provides a significant economic boost to the downtown area during a typically slower season. Participating businesses report increased engagement and positive feedback from customers eager to prioritize their health.
Wittrup emphasized that the Winter Wellness Week is designed to be accessible to all. "We've worked hard to ensure there's something for everyone, regardless of fitness level, budget, or experience," she said. "Our goal is to make wellness approachable and enjoyable for the entire community." The Milwaukee Downtown website (https://www.downtownmilwaukee.com/events/winter-wellness-week/) provides a complete schedule of events, special offers, and registration information. The website allows users to filter events by type, date, and price, making it easy to find activities that fit their needs and preferences.
Looking ahead, Milwaukee Downtown envisions Winter Wellness Week becoming an annual tradition, expanding its reach and impact each year. Plans are already underway to incorporate more outdoor activities - weather permitting - and to partner with local healthcare providers to offer educational workshops on topics such as nutrition, stress management, and mental health. The ultimate aim is to establish Milwaukee as a city that prioritizes the wellbeing of its residents, even in the depths of winter.
