Bloomfield Launches Expanded 'Project Healthy Bones' for Seniors

BLOOMFIELD, NJ - April 9th, 2026 - The township of Bloomfield today announced the official launch of "Project Healthy Bones," a comprehensive wellness program designed to address the growing need for preventative bone health support amongst its senior population. Building upon the initial announcement, the program has expanded from simple screenings to encompass a holistic approach that includes preventative education, accessible diagnostics, and collaborative partnerships with local healthcare institutions.

Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by decreased bone density and increased fracture risk, is a significant health concern for seniors. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and 44 million have low bone density, increasing their risk. The financial burden of osteoporosis-related fractures is substantial, estimated at $25 billion annually. Bloomfield's initiative directly addresses this growing public health challenge within its own community.

"Our seniors are the heart of Bloomfield, and investing in their well-being is a top priority," stated Mayor Michael Venezia during a press conference held at the Bloomfield Civic Center. "Project Healthy Bones isn't just about treating osteoporosis after it develops; it's about preventing it in the first place. We want to empower our residents to maintain their independence, mobility, and quality of life for as long as possible."

The program's core offering remains free bone density screenings for residents aged 65 and older, or those with identified risk factors. These screenings, now utilizing the latest in low-dose digital X-ray technology, are available by appointment through the Bloomfield Health Department at 973-887-3330. However, the 2026 iteration of Project Healthy Bones goes far beyond simple screenings.

Expanded Program Components:

  • Educational Workshops: A series of monthly workshops will be held at the Bloomfield Public Library and the Senior Center, covering topics such as calcium and Vitamin D intake, weight-bearing exercises, fall prevention strategies, and understanding bone density test results. Expert nutritionists, physical therapists, and physicians will lead these sessions.
  • Community Partnerships: Bloomfield has forged strong partnerships with Clara Maass Medical Center and Mountainside Hospital, ensuring that individuals identified with low bone density or osteoporosis receive timely referrals for further evaluation and treatment. A dedicated care coordinator will assist seniors in navigating the healthcare system.
  • Mobile Screening Unit: Recognizing the challenges some seniors face with transportation, Bloomfield has invested in a mobile bone density screening unit. This unit will regularly visit senior housing complexes and community centers, bringing the screenings directly to residents.
  • Exercise and Wellness Classes: The Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Department is offering specially designed exercise classes tailored to improve bone health and balance. These include low-impact aerobics, Tai Chi, and yoga sessions.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Registered dietitians will provide personalized nutritional guidance, helping seniors create meal plans rich in bone-building nutrients.

"We've learned from other successful senior wellness programs across the state," explained Dr. Anya Sharma, Bloomfield's Health Officer and a key architect of the expanded initiative. "The key is accessibility, education, and collaboration. We want to break down barriers to care and provide seniors with the knowledge and resources they need to take control of their bone health."

Project Healthy Bones is funded through a combination of township budget allocations and a grant from the New Jersey Department of Health. The township is also actively seeking sponsorships from local businesses and philanthropic organizations to further expand the program's reach.

Residents can find more information about Project Healthy Bones, including a schedule of workshops and screening appointments, on the Bloomfield township website: https://www.bloomfieldnj.gov/.
