Newark Launches Initiative to Combat Heart Disease

NEWARK, NJ - April 9th, 2026 - The City of Newark is intensifying its focus on cardiovascular health with a multi-pronged initiative, beginning with the Heart Health Summit scheduled for this Friday, April 13th, at the Seth Boyden Recreation Center. This isn't simply a one-day event; city officials are framing it as the launchpad for a sustained effort to combat heart disease - the nation's leading cause of death - within the Newark community.
The free summit, a collaboration between the City of Newark, Newark Community Health Centers, and the American Heart Association, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provide residents with crucial health screenings, hands-on CPR training, and a wealth of information from local health and wellness organizations. Mayor Ras J. Baraka emphasized the proactive nature of the program, stating, "This is a great opportunity for our residents to learn more about heart health and take proactive steps to improve their wellness."
But the city's vision extends far beyond a single event. Following the summit, Newark Community Health Centers will expand access to preventative cardiac care, focusing on early detection and intervention. This will include increased frequency of screenings at all their locations throughout the city, and the implementation of new programs tailored to address the specific cardiovascular health challenges faced by Newark residents.
Addressing Disparities in Heart Health
Heart disease disproportionately affects certain populations, and Newark is no exception. Studies have shown that socio-economic factors, access to healthcare, and lifestyle choices all contribute to higher rates of cardiovascular illness in urban communities. The city is particularly focused on reaching underserved neighborhoods where access to preventative care is limited. The initiative specifically aims to tackle these disparities through targeted outreach programs and culturally sensitive health education.
Dr. Evelyn Reed, Chief Medical Officer at Newark Community Health Centers, explained, "We're not just offering screenings; we're providing education about risk factors, healthy eating habits, the importance of exercise, and stress management techniques. We want to empower residents to make lasting changes to improve their heart health." She also highlighted the importance of addressing underlying health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which are often precursors to heart disease.
CPR Training: A Community-Wide Skill
The CPR training component of the summit is receiving particular attention. With sudden cardiac arrest often occurring outside of hospital settings, the ability to administer CPR can be life-saving. The American Heart Association instructors will offer training for all ages and skill levels, ensuring that more Newark residents are equipped to respond effectively in emergency situations. The city is exploring options for ongoing CPR training opportunities throughout the year, potentially incorporating the training into school curricula and community centers.
Resource Fair: Connecting Residents to Vital Services
The summit's resource fair will connect residents with a comprehensive network of health and wellness organizations. This includes local hospitals, support groups, nutritionists, fitness centers, and organizations offering assistance with health insurance and access to affordable healthcare. The goal is to create a seamless pathway for residents to receive the ongoing support they need to maintain their heart health.
Long-Term Vision: A Healthier Newark
This initiative aligns with Newark's broader commitment to becoming a healthier city. The city is investing in improvements to public spaces, promoting active transportation, and increasing access to healthy food options. The Heart Health Summit is seen as an integral part of this larger strategy.
Residents interested in attending the Heart Health Summit are encouraged to register in advance through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/newark-heart-health-summit-tickets-810527797337. City officials anticipate a strong turnout and believe the summit will be a significant step towards improving the cardiovascular health of the Newark community.
