Regular aerobic activity strengthens the heart muscle, lowers resting heart rate, and improves the body's ability to transport oxygen to working muscles.

From a weight management perspective, cardio is highly effective for burning calories during the actual session. Activities such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or steady-state jogging can create a significant caloric deficit, which is essential for short-term weight loss. Additionally, cardio is frequently associated with improved mental health, as the release of endorphins during prolonged aerobic activity helps mitigate stress and anxiety.

The Critical Necessity of Strength Training

While cardio supports the heart, resistance or strength training supports the structural framework of the body. This can lead to a plateau in weight loss, as the decrease in muscle mass lowers the BMR.

Moreover, a lack of strength training can lead to a condition often described as being "skinny fat," where an individual may have a low body weight but a high percentage of body fat and low muscle tone. This imbalance not only affects aesthetic appearance but also impacts functional strength, making everyday tasks more difficult and increasing the risk of sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) later in life.

Achieving the Hybrid Equilibrium

The most effective fitness strategy is not a choice between cardio and weights, but rather a strategic integration of both. This hybrid approach, known as concurrent training, allows an individual to reap the cardiovascular benefits of aerobic exercise while maintaining the metabolic and structural advantages of strength training.
