NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - The North Augusta Care Team, launched just two years ago, is experiencing a surge in demand for its services, prompting an expanded volunteer recruitment drive. What began as a grassroots effort to combat social isolation, food insecurity and limited transportation access for vulnerable residents has quickly evolved into a vital community lifeline. As of today, February 9th, 2026, the team reports a 40% increase in service requests compared to the same period last year, a trend organizers attribute to a combination of factors including rising living costs and an aging population.

Initially focused on providing basic assistance like meal delivery and friendly visits, the Care Team has broadened its scope to include essential services like prescription pickup, light household chores for those with mobility issues, and assistance navigating complex healthcare and benefit applications. The organization's founder, Sarah Jenkins, explains, "We quickly realized that simply delivering a meal wasn't always enough. Many of our clients were struggling with layers of challenges, and we wanted to address the root causes, not just the symptoms."

The increase in need isn't solely demographic. The economic pressures of the last few years have significantly impacted the financial stability of many North Augusta residents. Inflation, particularly in food and fuel costs, has pushed more individuals and families into food insecurity. The loss of several key local employers in late 2025 has further exacerbated the situation, leaving many unemployed and reliant on community support.

"We're seeing a lot of working families who simply can't make ends meet, despite having one or even two jobs," says Jenkins. "They're having to choose between paying rent, buying groceries, or getting necessary medical care. That's where we come in, providing a safety net to help them stay afloat."

The Care Team's success is built on strong partnerships with local organizations and churches. These collaborations allow the team to efficiently reach those in need and avoid duplication of services. Key partners include the North Augusta Senior Center, which provides a space for the Care Team to host social events and wellness workshops, and the local food bank, which supplies the team with non-perishable food items for meal delivery.

However, maintaining this level of service requires a dedicated volunteer base. Currently, the Care Team relies on approximately 75 active volunteers, but organizers estimate they need at least 100 more to meet the growing demand. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, ranging from direct client support (meal delivery, friendly visits, transportation) to administrative roles (answering phones, managing data, fundraising).

The team is actively seeking volunteers with specialized skills as well. "We're particularly looking for individuals with experience in healthcare, social work, or financial counseling," Jenkins states. "These skills would be invaluable in helping us provide more comprehensive support to our clients."

Beyond the practical assistance, volunteers provide something equally important: human connection. For many vulnerable residents, particularly seniors living alone, the Care Team's friendly visits are a lifeline against social isolation. "Sometimes, just having someone to talk to, to share a cup of coffee with, can make all the difference in the world," says volunteer Mark Thompson, a retired teacher who has been with the Care Team since its inception.

The North Augusta Care Team is committed to ensuring that no vulnerable resident is left behind. They are actively exploring innovative solutions to expand their reach, including the development of a mobile resource unit to deliver services to residents in remote areas.
