Public Health Museum Announces Free Annual Health Fair in Tewksbury
By The Tewksbury Gazette
March 12, 2025
Tewksbury, Mass. — The Public Health Museum (PHM) is set to bring a full‑day health fair to the heart of Tewksbury next month, offering residents a wide range of free screenings, educational workshops, and interactive exhibits. The event, slated for Thursday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will take place in the Tewksbury Town Hall—the community’s historic meeting place that has long served as a hub for civic life.
A Celebration of Health and Community
“The goal of this fair is simple: to put health education and essential services right in front of the people who need them,” said Dr. Laura McConnell, director of the PHM’s Community Outreach Program. “We’re bringing experts, resources, and fun into a space that’s familiar and welcoming to everyone in Tewksbury.”
The PHM, a nonprofit organization based in Boston, has been partnering with local health providers and educational institutions for nearly a decade. The museum’s flagship exhibits—displaying the evolution of public health from the 19th‑century cholera outbreaks to modern pandemic responses—have already drawn visitors from across the state. The upcoming fair extends that mission to the local level, offering practical tools for everyday health maintenance.
What to Expect
The fair will feature more than 20 booths covering a range of health topics:
- Vital Signs & Basic Screening – Free checks of blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, blood sugar, and cholesterol, staffed by nurses and medical students from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
- Dental Health – Quick oral examinations and oral hygiene demonstrations run by volunteers from the Boston Dental Association.
- Mental Health Resources – Information on stress management, depression, and anxiety from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and local counseling centers.
- Substance Use & Recovery – Guidance on tobacco cessation, alcohol moderation, and opioid use, with support groups and hotline information.
- Chronic Disease Management – Educational talks on diabetes, hypertension, and asthma from the Tewksbury Community Health Center.
- Nutrition & Physical Activity – Cooking demos featuring locally sourced ingredients, and free yoga and tai‑chi classes for all ages.
- Children’s Health Corner – Interactive games that teach kids about nutrition, hand washing, and healthy habits, complete with a mini “doctor’s office” for role‑playing.
In addition to these booths, the fair will host a live panel discussion titled “Health in the 21st Century: Bridging Knowledge and Action”, featuring a panel of local physicians, a public health professor, and a community activist. The discussion will explore how residents can translate the information and resources into real lifestyle changes.
Community Partnerships
The PHM has secured support from a host of partners, including:
- Tewksbury Town Government – The event is officially sanctioned by the town council and will be promoted through the town’s website and community newsletters.
- Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) – Providing funding and technical support, MDPH will also host a booth offering updates on vaccination schedules and public health alerts.
- Local Businesses – The Tewksbury Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the free coffee and tea tent, while The Tewksbury Bakery will serve healthy snack samples.
“We’re grateful for the collaboration with both public and private sectors,” said Mayor Susan K. Lee of Tewksbury. “Health fairs like this create a platform where we can celebrate community resilience and encourage proactive health behaviors.”
Registration and Participation
Attendance is free, and the fair welcomes all ages. Registration is encouraged but not required; attendees can simply arrive and check in at the registration desk. However, certain activities, such as the free yoga classes, require pre‑registration to manage capacity. Dr. McConnell provided the following details:
“You can register online at the PHM’s event page (link below) if you’d like to secure a spot in the yoga or tai‑chi sessions. If you prefer to attend as a walk‑in, just show up at the fair—it’s open to anyone who wants to participate.”

Participants are asked to bring valid identification for age verification (especially for blood sugar and cholesterol tests) and any health insurance information, though all services are offered at no cost regardless of coverage status.
Educational Impact and Future Goals
The PHM’s annual health fair has evolved from a modest gathering of a few dozen volunteers last year to an anticipated 3,000‑visitor event this year. Dr. McConnell highlighted the data that informs the fair’s programming:
“We analyze local health metrics—such as rates of hypertension, obesity, and mental health diagnoses—to shape our fair’s focus. For example, in 2023, Tewksbury had a 28% obesity rate among adults, compared to the state average of 22%. That data guided us to allocate more space to nutrition and physical activity workshops.”
Looking ahead, the PHM plans to expand the fair into a week‑long health month in 2026, featuring rotating themes and additional community partners. Dr. McConnell concluded:
“Our vision is a town where every resident has the knowledge, resources, and confidence to lead a healthy life. The Tewksbury Health Fair is a tangible step toward that goal.”
