Humana Offers $100,000 Grant to Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Charities

CINCINNATI--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Today, Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) began accepting applications for its 2011 Humana Communities Benefit grant through its web site a" Humana.com/HCB. This will be the fourth consecutive year the health and benefits company has awarded at least $100,000 to Greater Cincinnati nonprofits working to improve the well-being of the Tri-State.

"This year, wea™re again looking for organizations that share our broad view of well-being. As a company, we know it begins when wea™re children and extends through our adulthood; it is physical, mental, emotional and social."

Including this yeara™s grant, Humana Communities Benefit has invested more than $450,000 in community health initiatives. Previous grant winners have increased access to health information for the hearing-impaired; expanded an educational program for school-aged children affected by autism; and launched an enterprise to engage people with disabilities in creating new products from salvaged and donated building items.

Humana Communities Benefit is open to 501(c)(3) organizations located in Greater Cincinnati working in the following areas:

  • Childhood health and education - Projects or initiatives that seek to improve health and academic achievement of children through the educational landscape.
  • Family wellness and active lifestyles a" Projects or initiatives that strengthen the health of families through physical, social, mental, emotional, or environmental support.
  • Health literacy for diverse populations and seniors a" Projects or initiatives dedicated to improving peoplea™s ability to access, understand, and use health information, especially low-income populations, and seniors.

Applications for this yeara™s grant are being accepted from eligible nonprofit organizations until June 30, 2011. A panel of local judges, comprised of community leaders, public officials and business representatives, will work with Humana to select the $100,000 honoree.
