Your Whoop app isn't just for fitness anymore - you can order blood tests through it now

WHOOP Expands Beyond Fitness: You Can Now Order Blood Tests Through the App
For the first time since its launch, the WHOOP fitness platform is taking a major step into the realm of clinical health testing. The company’s latest announcement reveals that users of its wearable and companion app can now order a range of blood tests—everything from vitamin D to hormone panels—directly from the WHOOP interface. This move marks a significant shift from a performance‑centric product to a more holistic health monitoring service, blurring the line between sports science and preventive medicine.
Why WHOOP Is Branching Out
WHOOP’s core promise has always been to help athletes recover, perform and stay healthy through continuous heart‑rate monitoring, sleep tracking and daily strain analysis. The new “Health Testing” feature builds on that data by adding a layer of biochemical context that was previously out of reach for most wearables.
“The body’s internal chemistry tells a story that no wearable sensor can read,” says Adam Saylor, WHOOP’s CEO. “By adding blood test insights, we’re giving users a richer, more actionable picture of their health and fitness.”
In a statement, WHOOP explained that the service will be offered in the U.S. first, with plans to roll out in other markets in 2025. The company also stressed that it is not positioning itself as a medical provider. “These tests are a tool for self‑management and do not replace a doctor’s diagnosis or treatment plan,” Saylor added.
How the Blood‑Testing Workflow Works
Order From the App
Users log into the WHOOP app, navigate to the “Health Testing” tab, and pick from a catalog of panels. Options include basic panels like “Vitamin D & B12,” advanced hormone panels, metabolic panels (glucose, cholesterol, liver function), and even personalized panels curated for athletes such as testosterone, ferritin and thyroid hormones.Receive a DIY Kit
WHOOP ships a kit that contains a pre‑labeled, temperature‑controlled container, a lancet, a sterile cotton swab, and clear instructions. The kit is designed to be user‑friendly for a finger‑stick sample, with no need for a phlebotomist.Collect and Ship
After the user collects the blood drop, they seal the kit and mail it back to an approved lab partner. WHOOP has partnered with established clinical labs, including Quest Diagnostics, to guarantee accurate and certified results. Results Pop Into the App
Within 3–5 business days, test results appear in the user’s WHOOP dashboard. The data is presented alongside the existing metrics—HRV, sleep, strain—to help users see how their biochemical status influences performance.Interpretation & Guidance
WHOOP offers AI‑driven recommendations, such as “consider vitamin D supplementation if your level is below 30 ng/mL.” However, the company cautions users to consult a healthcare professional before making any medical decisions.
What Tests Are Available?
WHOOP’s initial catalog includes 14 distinct panels:
| Panel | Typical Components |
|---|---|
| Vitamin D & B12 | 25‑OH vitamin D, B12, folate |
| Iron Panel | Ferritin, serum iron, TIBC |
| Hormone Panel | Testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, DHEA |
| Metabolic Panel | Fasting glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol (HDL, LDL, triglycerides), liver enzymes (ALT, AST) |
| Thyroid Panel | TSH, free T4, free T3 |
| Comprehensive Metabolic Panel | Adds electrolytes, creatinine, BUN |
| Inflammation Panel | CRP, ESR |
| Cardiovascular Risk Panel | Lipid panel + apolipoprotein A/B |
| Omega‑3 Index | Omega‑3 fatty acids in RBC |
| Vitamin A | Serum retinol |
| Vitamin K | Phylloquinone |
| Zinc & Selenium | Serum levels |
| Antioxidant Panel | Vitamin C, glutathione |
| Personalized Athlete Panel | Customized based on user’s sport, age, sex, training load |
WHOOP plans to expand the catalog with additional panels (e.g., gut‑health, immune‑profile) based on user demand and clinical research.
Privacy, Security and Data Ownership
Given the sensitive nature of blood test data, WHOOP has reiterated its commitment to data security. All test results are stored in encrypted form on WHOOP’s cloud infrastructure, which complies with HIPAA standards. Users retain ownership of their data and can delete it from the platform at any time.
“Privacy is non‑negotiable,” says WHOOP’s VP of Product, Maya Patel. “The app’s end‑to‑end encryption and granular access controls ensure that user data remains confidential and is only used for the purpose of enhancing health insights.”
Cost and Accessibility
The initial rollout will include a subscription‑based pricing model. Basic panels start at $99, while more comprehensive panels can cost up to $299. WHOOP offers a discounted rate for subscribers who already pay the premium membership fee, making the service affordable for its core user base.
There are no upfront costs for shipping the kit; however, users are responsible for the return postage. WHOOP provides a prepaid shipping label with the kit.
Industry Context
WHOOP is not alone in bringing clinical testing into the consumer wellness space. Companies like EverlyWell and 23andMe have offered at‑home labs for years, but WHOOP’s integration into a real‑time fitness ecosystem gives it a unique advantage. Athletes and health‑conscious consumers can now correlate biochemical fluctuations with sleep quality, heart‑rate variability and training load—all in one dashboard.
Experts are cautiously optimistic. Dr. Lisa Chen, a sports medicine physician, notes, “Providing users with actionable lab data is a powerful tool, but the key is ensuring that the information is interpreted correctly. WHOOP’s partnership with certified labs and the inclusion of medical guidance help mitigate misinterpretation risks.”
What This Means for the Future
By adding blood testing, WHOOP is positioning itself as a “complete health companion.” The ability to track a biochemical signature over time could help users spot emerging issues—such as vitamin D deficiency or early signs of metabolic dysfunction—before they become symptomatic. For professional athletes, these insights could inform training periodization, recovery strategies and injury prevention.
At the same time, the move signals a broader trend: wearable companies are stepping into the clinical space, offering services that bridge consumer health monitoring and medical diagnostics. Whether this trend will accelerate and become mainstream remains to be seen, but WHOOP’s bold leap into blood testing is already reshaping how people think about fitness and health.
