SoCalBio Investor & Partnership Conference Keynote to be Delivered by Bioscience Industry Veteran Perry Karsen

LOS ANGELES--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--The Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio) is pleased to announce that Perry Karsen - chief operations officer of Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ: CELG) - will deliver the keynote address at the 12th Annual SoCalBio Investor & Partnership Conference, which will be held Thursday, November 4th at the J W Marriott of L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.

"His achievements and breadth of experience in venture capital, M&A and licensing for both large and small life science companies make him uniquely qualified to discuss how Los Angeles-area biomedical entrepreneurs can succeed."

Mr. Karsen's keynote will focus on collaboration trends during and following the current economic downturn. It will target executives at emerging medical device, biotechnology and healthcare informatics firms by building on this year's conference theme: "Sustaining Innovation in a Challenging Economy."

Most recently, Mr. Karsen served as president and CEO of Pearl Therapeutics, which develops double and triple combination therapies for highly prevalent respiratory diseases. From 2004-2009, he served as senior vice president and head of worldwide business development for Celgene Corporation (his current employer), where he was also president of the Asia/Pacific Region. Prior to joining Celgene, he was senior vice president of business development at Human Genome Sciences (NASDAQ: HGSI).

Earlier in his career, Mr. Karsen served as vice president of strategic business analysis and development at Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY); senior vice president of marketing at Zimmer, Inc. (NYSE and SIX: ZMH); and director of business development and representative director, Japan at Genentech (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY). He also worked in various domestic and international roles with Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT), and was a general partner at Pequot Ventures, where he was responsible for early and late stage investments in biotechnology and medical device firms.

Mr. Karsen earned a Masters of Management degree from Northwestern Universitya™s Kellogg Graduate School of Management, a Masters in Teaching of Biology from Duke University, and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois, Urbana.
