  • This is the 6th case of locally acquired terrestrial rabies since 2009, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services says.

The Suffolk County Health Department reported the discovery of a sixth rabid raccoon in the county, found in the vicinity of Montauk Highway and Brook Street in Lindenhurst on August 23. This incident follows five other cases of rabid raccoons identified earlier in the year in various locations within Suffolk County. The health department advises residents to avoid contact with wild or stray animals and to ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies. If bitten or scratched by an animal, individuals are urged to wash the wound and seek medical attention immediately, and to report the incident to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.
