Brazil Ministry of Health Awards Zoll AED Contract for Public EMS System
CHELMSFORD, Mass.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--ZOLL® Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, announced today that the Ministry of Health in Brazil has awarded a contract to ZOLL to supply the [ AED Plus® ]for a country-wide early defibrillation program.
"This is a major investment undertaken for a public EMS system on a worldwide scale. The AED Plus will be a key element to strengthen each link of the Chain of Survival and provide the best support when rescuing a victim of sudden cardiac arrest"
The contract for more than 5,000 units represents the largest single order placed with ZOLL for the ZOLL AED Plus since its introduction in 2002. It is also the largest purchase of AEDs by the Brazil Ministry of Health. The order standardizes the AED Plus in the SAMU (Sistema de Atendimento Movel de Urgencia (Emergency Mobile Treatment Service), Brazila™s public EMS Service, which includes ambulances, motorcycles, helicopters and rescue boats.
aThis is a major investment undertaken for a public EMS system on a worldwide scale. The AED Plus will be a key element to strengthen each link of the Chain of Survival and provide the best support when rescuing a victim of sudden cardiac arrest,a said Dr. Clesio Mello de Castro, Coordinator for the SAMU.
aThe expansive placement of the AED Plus across Brazil is an important initiative in improving survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest,a said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL. aDelivering early defibrillation in combination with high-quality CPR is critical to improving resuscitation outcomes.a
The AED Plus requires minimal training to operate and is ideal for the infrequent rescuer. The AED Plus offers Real CPR Help® to help rescuers provide high-quality manual CPR. This feedback technology features real-time audible and visual feedback to rescuers to help achieve the proper rate and depth of CPR chest compressions.
In addition to this initiative in early defibrillation, 40 units of the ZOLL [ AutoPulse® ] non-invasive cardiac support pump was selected and implemented by SAMU Brasilia, one of the largest public EMS services in the country, earlier this year.
SAMU Brasilia installed AutoPulse units in its fleet of ambulances, one for each vehicle plus four spare training boards. The AutoPulse is the only automated chest compression device which uses a load-distributing LifeBand® to squeeze the entire chest. As a result, victims receive more consistent, high-quality compressions than those delivered by simple automated CPR devices, which means improved blood flow. The AutoPulse was granted health clearance in January 2009 and is the only automated chest compression system available for sale in Brazil.
