VA changes rules on Veterans' health care access

Veterans will no longer need a second VA physician to review and approve their eligibility to receive non-VA health care.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has introduced new rules to enhance veterans' access to health care, effective from September 2023. These changes, part of the Veterans Comprehensive Prevention, Access to Care, and Treatment (COMPACT) Act of 2020, aim to streamline the process for veterans in a suicidal crisis to receive free emergency health care at both VA and non-VA facilities. The new rules allow veterans to access up to 30 days of inpatient care and 90 days of outpatient care without prior VA enrollment, covering the costs for transportation, treatment, and follow-up care. This initiative is designed to remove barriers to care, ensuring that veterans in crisis can receive immediate and comprehensive support.
