A new report shows access to mental health care continues to be a major problem in Maine, and experts say it isn't getting better.

A recent report from the Maine Council of Churches and the Maine Center for Economic Policy highlights the ongoing challenges Mainers face in accessing mental health care, revealing that many are unable to receive timely and affordable services. The study, titled "Mental Health in Maine: A Call to Action," points out that the state has one of the lowest numbers of mental health providers per capita in the U.S., exacerbating the issue. It also notes that long wait times, high costs, and a lack of insurance coverage are significant barriers, particularly for low-income individuals and those in rural areas. The report calls for increased funding and policy changes to improve mental health services, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to address the crisis.
