Aetna and the Aetna Foundation Granted $1.03 Million to Washington, D.C.-Based Nonprofits in 2010
HARTFORD, Conn.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Aetna (NYSE: [ AET ]) and the Aetna Foundation together awarded $1.03 million in community grants and sponsorships to Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organizations during 2010. The grants were made to organizations addressing a variety of health issues, including obesity among adults and children, racial and ethnic equity in health care, and needed improvements in the integration and coordination of health care services. In addition, grants were made in support of arts and cultural programs, human services and academic organizations, faith-based initiatives and many others.

- $331,000 to the Brookings Institution;
- $150,000 to the National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine;
- $100,000 to AcademyHealth;
- $50,000 to Springboard 2000 Enterprises Inc.;
- $50,000 to Families USA;
- $37,500 to the District of Columbia Primary Care Association;
- $31,903 to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts;
- $30,000 to the Hispanic College Fund;
- $27,500 to the Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural and Minority Medicine;
- $25,000 to the Better World Fund Inc.;
- $25,000 to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce;
- $25,000 to the National Dental Association;
- $25,000 to the 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, D.C. Inc.;
- $20,000 to Grantmakers in Health;
- $15,000 to the Lawyersa™ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law;
- $15,000 to the Society for Womena™s Health Research;
- $12,500 to Howard University;
- $10,000 to the National Italian American Foundation;
- $10,000 to the American National Red Cross;

Nationwide during 2010, Aetna and the Aetna Foundation gave $15.6 million in grants. In addition, Aetna employees, retirees and directors donated an additional $6.9 million through the company's matching gift program, bringing combined giving in communities where Aetna employees and customers live and work to nearly $22.5 million. And, Aetnaa™s employees donated more than dollars, generously giving nearly 335,000 hours of their personal time and talents in communities nationwide. Since 2003, Aetna employees have logged more than 2.3 million volunteer hours.
