HARTFORD, Conn.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Aetna (NYSE: [ AET ]) announced today that Fernando Aguirre, chairman and chief executive officer of Chiquita Brands International, Inc., has been appointed to Aetnaa™s Board of Directors, effective immediately. With the addition of Aguirre, 53, the companya™s board increases to 13 members.

Aguirre became chairman and CEO of Chiquita Brands in 2004. The company has more than $3 billion in revenues and sells products worldwide with the Chiquita brand on bananas, healthy snacks and smoothies, and the Fresh Express brand on salads in North America. He has led the companya™s strategic business transformation, leveraging the strong equity of the companya™s brands, expanding into new markets and products and acquiring other top food companies to secure Chiquitaa™s position as an international leader in nutritious foods. Before joining Chiquita, Aguirre worked for more than 23 years in increasingly responsible positions in brand management, general management and turnarounds at Procter & Gamble (P&G). In addition to working in the United States, he spent time leading business units in Mexico, Canada and Brazil.
A native of Mexico, Aguirre earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business from Southern Illinois University in 1980. He also attended the prestigious YPO Harvard Presidenta™s seminar for 10 years, earning Harvard Business School graduate status in 2009. He serves on the board of directors for Chiquita Brands and the Levi Strauss & Company and is also a member of the International Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
