National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NNHAAD), observed annually on March 20, aims to raise awareness about the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. This day highlights the need for culturally appropriate prevention, testing, and treatment services. The initiative began in 2007, spearheaded by the National Native Capacity Building Assistance Network in collaboration with the CDC, to address the higher rates of HIV infection among Native populations due to factors like poverty, substance abuse, and limited access to healthcare. NNHAAD encourages community involvement through events like educational workshops, testing drives, and cultural activities that promote dialogue and reduce stigma. Individuals can get involved by participating in these events, volunteering, or spreading awareness through social media using hashtags like #NNHAAD. The day also serves as a call to action for policy changes to improve health equity and access to care for Native communities.
