BEDFORD, MA--(Marketwire - February 24, 2009) - Insulet Corporation (
Thirteen-year-old Tara Schmidt of Newbury Park, CA is the grand prize winner and will receive a MacBook® Pro Notebook Computer. Her video titled "Tara and the OmniPod" ([ www.myomnipod.com/videocontest/winners ]) was chosen by five judges who are OmniPod users. Diagnosed with [ Type 1 diabetes ] at age 11, Tara describes how before OmniPod she was dependent on her mom to give her insulin shots every day, including at school during lunch.
"OmniPod allowed me to start playing sports again. I love field hockey and play year round. With no tubing, I don't have to worry about it getting caught on my field hockey stick," Tara explains. "It's pretty tough too. I can wrestle or play rugby or flag football during PE class. There's no sport I have to sit out."
"OmniPod has really given me my independence back. You can't see the OmniPod under my clothes, and I can easily control it with my wireless Personal Diabetes Manager, which none of the other kids think twice about me using, given technology these days," Tara adds.
Lara Whitley of Fredericksburg, VA ([ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3pUu6SKFbo ]) and Caleb Schlissel of Danbury, CT ([ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9chqqZPYL40 ]) are the contest's runner-up winners and each will receive a Flip Mino camcorder.
