ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwire - March 2, 2009) - Pentaho Corp., the commercial open source alternative for [ business intelligence ], today announced that Cardiac Science (NASDAQ: [ CSCX ]), a global leader in advanced cardiac diagnosis, resuscitation, rehabilitation, and informatics products, selected Pentaho [ Data Integration ] Enterprise Edition to populate and maintain its enterprise [ data warehouse ] to provide the company's users with a consistent, unified source of information.

Cardiac Science, the successor to the cardiac businesses that established the trusted Burdick®, HeartCentrix®, Powerheart®, and Quinton® brands, has customers in more than 100 countries worldwide, the company has operations in North America, Europe, and Asia. Prior to the Pentaho deployment, accessing fundamental information across its multiple systems and data sources required constant IT involvement, creating a bottleneck in information access. Cardiac Science needed timely and accurate business information for marketing, sales, accounting, and engineering quality and needed to find a smart way to archive a large, rapidly growing production database.

"We chose Pentaho after evaluating several providers," said Debbie Shapiro, [ data warehouse ] manager at Cardiac Science. "Pentaho provides the same or better functionality and more support versus the competition. They provide a lower total cost of ownership versus proprietary systems. We've been very happy with Pentaho Data Integration Enterprise Edition so far."

Pentaho [ Data Integration ] Enterprise Edition integrates data from a SyteLine ERP Progress database and archives the information in a Microsoft SQL Server database. Future development will incorporate other data sources that were the result of acquisitions. Pentaho Data Integration is deployed on a Dell server running the Microsoft Windows operating system. With an intuitive drag and drop design environment it is easy for administrators to define and maintain data extraction jobs and the metadata-driven engine addresses complex integration routines without having to write code. The professional support from Pentaho and vibrant community helped accelerate deployment while minimizing risk and cost.

"IT organizations are looking for ways to 'do more with less,' and commercial open source [ ETL ] is a great way to do that," said Lance Walter, vice president of marketing at Pentaho Corporation. "Pentaho is helping customers like Cardiac Science solve the same business problems that they could have solved with proprietary [ ETL ], but at a fraction of the cost and without the complexity."
