Aetna Grants $1.35 Million to Nonprofits in Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia in 2009

MCLEAN, Va.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Aetna (NYSE: AET) and the Aetna Foundation in 2009 awarded community grants and sponsorships in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia totaling $1.35 million, with a particular focus on disease prevention, obesity and health screening.

The contributions support Aetnaa™s commitment to enhancing the quality of health care, and reducing racial and ethnic disparities. In total, the Aetna Foundation, Aetna and its employees awarded more than $24 million nationally in 2009.

The largest of those grants was for $200,000 to Project Hope: The People-to-People Health Foundation. Aetna funds were used to produce a volume of Health Affairs that explored issues surrounding health care cost containment, and promoted issue content and constructive dialogue on the topic through a media briefing in Washington, D.C.
