Microscopic plastic levels far higher in those who suffer strokes, study finds

  • Patients who suffered strokes, mini-strokes or temporary blindness had levels of "nanoplastic" particles in their necks 51 times higher than healthy subjects, an abstract of a small-scale study released Tuesday shows.

A study published in the journal Neurology has found that individuals who have experienced a stroke have significantly higher levels of microplastics in their arteries compared to those who have not had a stroke. The research, conducted by scientists at the University of Campania in Italy, involved analyzing arterial plaque from 304 patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy surgery. The study revealed that 58% of the patients had measurable amounts of polyethylene in their plaque, while 12% had polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Alarmingly, those with higher levels of microplastics in their arteries were not only more likely to have had a stroke but also faced a higher risk of experiencing a heart attack or death in the subsequent three years. This groundbreaking research underscores the potential health risks posed by microplastics and calls for further investigation into their impact on cardiovascular health.
