  • A new evidence review says that coffee and tea consumption are linked to a lower risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, and head and neck, per the results published in the journal Cancer.

A study published in the International Journal of Cancer suggests that drinking coffee and tea may help protect against certain cancers. Researchers from the University of Southern California analyzed data from over 500,000 participants in the UK Biobank study and found that individuals who consumed higher amounts of coffee and tea had a lower risk of developing cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus. The protective effect is believed to be due to the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds present in these beverages. The study also noted that the benefits were more pronounced in those who did not smoke or drink alcohol excessively, indicating that lifestyle factors play a significant role in the effectiveness of coffee and tea as cancer preventatives.
