New Study Reveals How Fruits And Veggies Protect You From Colon Cancer
- Colon cancer rates among young adults are rising, with 20 per cent of cases now in people under 54. A Flinders University study shows that a high-fibre diet with healthy fats can reduce the risk by 15 per cent.
A recent study published in the journal "Gut" has highlighted the protective effects of fruits and vegetables against colon cancer. The research, conducted by experts from the University of Bristol, analyzed data from over 75,000 participants in the UK Biobank study. It found that individuals who consumed higher amounts of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables had a significantly lower risk of developing colorectal cancer. The study suggests that the fiber in these foods ferments in the colon, producing short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Furthermore, the study emphasized the importance of dietary diversity, noting that a variety of plant foods could enhance the gut microbiome, thereby offering better protection against cancer. This research underscores the need for dietary guidelines to promote increased intake of fruits and vegetables to prevent colorectal cancer.
