Pregnant woman and baby saved after doctors find grapefruit-sized tumor: 'Extremely rare'
- A Chicago woman was just weeks away from giving birth when a nagging cough led to a shocking medical discovery. MaKenna Lauterbach shared her harrowing story with Fox News Digital.
A pregnant woman in her 30s, who was 35 weeks into her pregnancy, was diagnosed with an extremely rare, grapefruit-sized tumor in her heart after experiencing severe shortness of breath. Initially, her symptoms were thought to be related to her pregnancy, but further investigation revealed a cardiac angiosarcoma, a type of cancer that originates in the heart's blood vessels. The tumor was discovered through an echocardiogram, which showed it was obstructing blood flow from the heart. Doctors at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago performed an emergency cesarean section to deliver the baby safely, followed by immediate open-heart surgery to remove the tumor. The baby was born healthy, and the mother's condition stabilized post-surgery, although she faces a challenging recovery and further treatment for the cancer. This case highlights the complexities of diagnosing and treating rare conditions during pregnancy.
