  • A specific class of anti-inflammatory drugs can help children avoid a debilitating complication of Crohn's disease, a new study shows.

The article from UPI discusses a study published in the journal *Inflammatory Bowel Diseases* which found that children with Crohn's disease who are treated with TNF inhibitors might face an increased risk of serious infections. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, analyzed data from over 1,000 pediatric patients and discovered that those on TNF inhibitors had a 30% higher chance of developing severe infections compared to those on other treatments. These infections included conditions like pneumonia and sepsis. The research highlights the need for careful monitoring of these young patients to manage the balance between controlling Crohn's disease and minimizing infection risks. The study's findings suggest that while TNF inhibitors are effective in managing symptoms, the potential for serious infections should be a consideration in treatment decisions.
