  • "This research highlights the role of physical activity and sedentary behavior as modifiable factors that may enhance brain health and reduce the incidence of these diseases," lead researcher Dr. Jia-Yi Wu of Fudan University in Shanghai, said in a news release.

The article from UPI discusses a study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, which found that engaging in regular physical activity can significantly benefit brain health. The research, involving over 10,000 participants from the 1946 British Birth Cohort, showed that individuals who maintained an active lifestyle from young adulthood into their 60s had better cognitive function, larger brain volumes, and healthier white matter in their brains by the age of 69. The study suggests that physical activity could help in reducing the risk of dementia and other cognitive impairments by promoting brain health through increased blood flow, reduced inflammation, and enhanced neuroplasticity. The findings underscore the importance of lifelong physical activity for maintaining mental acuity in later life.
