Snakes like common krait, Indian cobra, Russell's viper, and saw-scaled viper are responsible for about 90 per cent of snakebites in the country

The Centre has declared snakebites as a notifiable disease in India, aiming to enhance the reporting and management of snakebite cases across the country. This decision was made in response to the significant public health challenge posed by snakebites, which result in numerous deaths and disabilities annually. By making snakebites notifiable, healthcare facilities are now required to report every case to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), which will help in better tracking, data collection, and resource allocation for treatment and prevention. This move is expected to improve the availability of anti-venom, increase awareness, and ultimately reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with snakebites.
