Health experts say preventing tick bites is the best defense against disease

  • As the weather warms and more people spend time outside, health professionals are reminding the public that parasites like ticks are active.

As spring ushers in warmer weather, experts are emphasizing the importance of tick safety to prevent Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. According to Dr. Benjamin Chan, New Hampshire's state epidemiologist, the state has seen a significant increase in Lyme disease cases, with over 2,000 cases reported last year. To protect against ticks, individuals should wear long sleeves and pants, use insect repellents containing DEET, and perform thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors. Dr. Elizabeth Talbot, the state's infectious disease expert, advises that ticks are most active from April through September, and early removal of ticks can prevent disease transmission. Both experts stress the importance of awareness and preventive measures to enjoy the outdoors safely during the tick season.
